Hi, replied in my blog: http://rapidolap.com/blog, really interesting topic.

Convergence Consulting Group offers an interesting mini-research on the BI vendors consolidation. Following up on that, I’d love to discuss that with the author. I think the industry reached the consolidation phase with the core segment of the BI platforms: SAP, Oracle, Microsoft a long time ago.

As the industry started to mature, the radical shakeout in a form of the Internet and social technologies increased the threat to the core assets and activities of the major companies. All of a sudden, SAP, Oracle, Microsoft and the others found themselves surrounded by the Internet technologies and the likes of Qlikview, and yes, RapidOlap. Hot, young companies having something to offer for the next industry re-emergence. For the ‘old-BI’ the sales are there, they just not generate high margins any longer. That change moved the industry from the traditional evolutionary path (fragmentation, shakeout, maturity, decline), to a new emerging wave which will end with more M&As, as the new companies get acquired.

I think the industry research is very relevant again, and interesting for BI. So, will the industry consolidate anytime soon? I doubt that it’ll happen within the next 2-3 years. The social Web is only unfolding. We’ll have lots of surprises, and BI is just a part of it.
